Living

I live on East Carson
Jun 2nd
I often blog about Southside wanderings so you think I would live there. Nope. Even though there are news articles of assholes coming from bars and peeing on peoples sidewalks at 2am I still would rather live there than where I do. I don’t live far at all though so I venture there often.
There is always something to do in Southside day or night. My sister and I ventured there to get some walking in.
Caribou Coffee can be found on East Carson in Southside Works. I buy their K-Cups for my Keurig Coffee Maker. I didn’t see them in the shop but you can find them many places K-Cups are sold. On a hot day my Strawberry Banana smoothie sure hit the spot!

Now that I had a cool drink I was hungry. So we ventured to The Pretzel Shop for something to eat. If you didn’t already know they have sandwiches made out of pretzels. Think that’s weird? Try one! My favorite used to only be available one day of the week and is now available every day. They also make veggie pizza on a pretzel among other goodies. They provide outdoor seating if you want to eat it right there. You can find them on 2316 East Carson. Here is a website with their menu —- Pretzel Shop Menu.

I hadn’t been in S&S Candy and Cigar Company in years. It can be found at 2025 East Carson. They have alot of bulk candy items for sale. It is quiet a savings compared to buying that much in single packs. I know many local softball and baseball leagues purchase here for the snack bar. My only wish is that they had the candy dots on paper. I miss those.
Little of This and That
May 27th
Right now I miss work for a few reasons. #1 I miss the money cause unemployment isn’t covering it all. #2 I miss talking to people every day. That’s about it. If I could make a living staying home and blogging your damn right I would. But I sure don’t miss not being home when my kids got home.
Best Restaurants Party
May 25th
First, I would like to thank Pittsburgh Magazine. I won two tickets to The Best Restaurants Event last night in a contest they held. I had never been to an event like that before. I went over my sisters house early to try on dresses and get ready considering I am not a dressy person. I assumed it was a very dressy affair and I think for the most part it was. There were a few people in jeans and tennis shoes and one girl in boots and fish nets. They sure made me wish I had dressed down at first as the heels were killing my feet. In the end I don’t think it was a jeans event and what I was wearing was more appropriate no matter how much I wished I wore something else.

When we first walked into the room it was pretty overwhelming at how many different booths there were to go to. I had no idea ahead of time what to expect. There were people everywhere in line at the various booths to sample all the wonderful food.
It didn’t occur to me until halfway through my evening to keep track of where I was taking pics from. Thank you to my sister for suggesting it!

In the very first line I realized Chris Fennimore was in front of me. I have been watching him on WQED for years and was excited just to be in the same room.
On to the food. I am not a raw fish person at all so I avoided anything of that nature. Unfortunately there were many of them. Raw salmon, tuna, and sushi of all kinds. I just can’t stomach it and that isn’t a place I wanted to get sick in. I am sure everyone there appreciates that. I also stayed away from the alcohol with one exception. I tried a drink from Mad Mex that had an enormous amount of alcohol in it but good. If I wanted to keep eating I couldn’t keep drinking. They had various wine’s and I noticed Penn Brewery was there.

Desert first? Sure, why not. These little yummy treats came from the Sweethouse Bake Shop in Mars, PA. I tried the Brownies with cream in them and they were yummylicious.
-
I have eaten at a Japanese Steakhouse before but had yet to make a trip to Nakama in the Southside. They had a few tables with different items. I believe one was Sushi. I ate the item below minus the portion of meat on one side of the plate that I asked them to leave off. What I did try was very good. I wish I had asked what it was.
-
One table looked like a marshmallow haven by (The) Common Plea Restaurant. I heard them mention that one of them had a kick of cayenne in it. I am not sure exactly what they were but they were yummy dipped in chocolate.
-
-
Cross Keys Inn had potato pancakes. They topped them with creme and salmon. I had one, hold the salmon. I love potato pancakes and this one sure was good.
-
A place I heard about before, I thought from someone on Twitter but I am now thinking it was on a WQED show. Regardless I have wanted to try it ever since. Franktuary in Downtown. I tried a Veggie frank that looked like a regular hot dog, taste wasn’t too bad. I also tried Locavore which is organic, grass-fed and made locally. I am trying to eat better and buying more organic but sometimes I am having a hard time liking the food. This frank was outstanding!
-
Another place I adored was Wooden Angel from Beaver.
Why, oh why do they have to be so far away? I watch alot of food tv and see chefs make Risotto all the time but have never eaten it. This restaurant had pork and bacon on risotto and it was divine! I was so close to licking my plate or asking for another. I definitely want to make a trip here for dinner sometime soon.
-
Ok. Yo Rita in Southside was there with some drink concoction. They managed to get me to try it by not telling me what it was but encouraging me to drink it first. I never found out what it was called nor what was in it. I don’t think I want to know. I’ll be nice and just say I didn’t finish it. Sorry.
-
I found another yummylicious dessert from Gullifty’s in Squirrel Hill. It was an apple cake with cheesecake in the middle and drizzled with caramel. First off, OMG yummy! Second. I have an apple cake recipe that tastes so much like theirs it just might be the same recipe. I got the recipe when I was in 7th or 8th grade in home ec class.
-
Jac’s Cafe in White Oak had two different kinds of soup. I love wedding soup and it is difficult to find good wedding soup so I choose that. Other than a need for some parmesan cheese it was pretty good.
-
Dinette in East Liberty had a good Rice Pudding. They use local, seasonal and organic ingredients in their foods.
-
The Claddagh Irish Pub in Southside Works is somewhere I have been wanting to try. They had an Artichoke and Spinach dip that was very good.
-
The last dish I will comment on was from the Square Cafe from Braddock Ave. This was a cheddar and chorizo biscuit. It was pretty good but I have to admit I had to ask my sister was chorizo was. I think after many of the spicy foods I did try and bold flavors I can say I expected more flavor from it, although it was a good last food to stuff into myself before going home.
-
I am not sure when I can wear my jeans again after all I ate. My sister kept asking me, “Do you think you can eat more?” As small as I am I said Yes LOL I do want to mention that some of the restaurants portions were probably a bit too large. I expected a tasting. It is very difficult to taste everything with such big portions and I didn’t like to waste, especially if I didn’t like it. I did see a Twitter message from Pittsburgh Magazine this morning that leftover food was being donated.
I’m not sure how much was left over though as many booths had to close down before 8pm as they were out of food.

Here is a picture of my sister and I sitting on the floor. We could barely walk at this point. I wanted to throw the heels in the garbage and kept dreaming of walking back to the car barefoot. I did walk back to the car barefoot. I didn’t even make it down the escalator before taking them off. Thats my sister on the left and me on the right. Stupid glare in my glasses.
We did get to take the June issue of Pittsburgh Magazine home as well as a glass with the event name on it. I feel bad for the many people still in the room who wouldn’t get a glass because some greedy people were taking up to 4 glasses each. I’ve already read my issue of the magazine from front to back. I think I may subscribe again. There was a year I started receiving it out of the blue. No one would fess up to sending it to me so I chalked it up that they used a recipe I submitted years ago as they used to give a subscription if they used it in something.

I had a great time and want to thank Pittsburgh Magazine again for the tickets! I hope to attend again.

To end this very long blog here are some pictures of some of the other booths I didn’t write about.
Pittsburgh Flea
May 21st
Get your mind out of the gutter. I’m talking about the Strip District. If you have never visited you really must. They have everything from local grown foods, to a natural grocery store, a store you can buy all your Steelers and Penguins stuff. If you haven’t visited it can be a bit overwhelming. I won’t focus on the entire Strip in this post but will have future posts about other things to do there.
Why don’t I take you on a mini tour of my trip to the Strip District’s Pittsburgh Flea. This is a new attraction to the Strip that started in April and takes place every Sunday from 8am-3pm. It takes place at 21st & Railroad Streets. We had been waiting for the weather to be nice to spend a day there and boy was it ever. It wasn’t too hot or too cold. The Pittsburgh Flea is so new that there aren’t many vendors, well if you compare to other flea markets. There were about 4 rows to walk down and I am hoping to see that grow.
Tour Capa and Jazz Performance
May 20th
As if I don’t promote Capa enough. I want to give you a virtual tour through the school. I had the pleasure of going to an event that took place on many floors which enabled me to see more than the front door and theater. Mind you I seem to be missing some of my pics. Hmmmm……..
On to the Capa Tour
One of the many Dance Studios, The Black Box, The Cafeteria, The Ceramics Studio:
Hallways and Stairwells:
The Ceramic Bowls we made that night will be donated to the Empty Bowls Dinner. The flower pots we decorated were for a garden project for the students.
Jazz At Capa
Just last night I attended a Capa Jazz Concert. My daughter plays Sax. I was looking through the awards case and saw an award from a year I attended Capa and it was the year a friend of mine was in a group that earned the Grand Prize in a contest for an OJ commercial they created.
I ran into Mr. Humphries whom I knew looked familiar and the name sounded familiar as well.
I finally got up the nerve to ask him if he ever taught at Capa. He said he had for 29 years. Click his name to go to his website. Also he is doing a Jazz River Cruise on June 6th. Proceeds help benefit the Roger Humphries Sr. Music Scholarship Fund. Click the Cruise for ticket info. Speaking of that fund I won the 50/50 raffle at the school event last night which goes towards the fund. I donated the money back to the fund. As much as I need it being laid off thats how much more I believe in Arts Education.
My daughter’s Sax Solo: (sorry the quality isn’t great I used my cell phone as I forgot my camera)

Touring Southside
May 17th
Friday a friend and I went out to lunch in Southside. I have been talking to her online for awhile but we met in a homeschooling group about 2 years ago. Thank you Amberlee for inviting me out to lunch. I had a great time!
re the earrings that make your holes bigger. We had agreed on how big you can go as the bigger you go the more likely it won’t go back to normal. Unfortunately I have run into the first time my teenager is going against her parents’ wishes. Kids can’t buy tattoos or get piercings without an adult but they can buy these that destroy their ears.
Pittsburgh CAPA
May 12th
Last night I attended a Pittsburgh Public schools World Arts & Cultures Showcase Event. There are events going on all this week at various locations. Last night’s event was hosted at Capa 6-12. The first performance was by the Capa Orchestra followed by the All City High School Band. My daughter participated in the All City Band in middle school a few years back as well as last night. The All City Band is where students are represented from all Pittsburgh Public Schools in one performance. These kids are damn talented to be able to get together and play one day during school hours and the next night perform for everyone.
My daughter has had many performances over the years. She started playing Clarinet back in 3rd grade at our local elementary school. Her teacher was Mr. Lennartz, who was also one of my music teachers at Capa High School many years ago. She went on to Rogers Middle School and then to Capa High School which as of this year both were merged to Capa 6-12. These kids brought me to tears back in middle school. I knew my daughter had a natural talent for music but hearing kids play for the first time together I was amazed.
ny art’s programs and I am proud to have my kids attend there.
What a weekend
May 10th
I have been looking forward to and dreading this past weekend for months. It marked the last time I would ever take my Girl Scout Troop camping again and the last time we would ever get together again. After 11 years of it the time came where I had to let go. It was a relief but sad at the same time. It is hard to say goodbye and I still hope to keep in touch with many of the girls I have led over the years.
So my Friday started with a shopping trip to Sams Club and Walmart for the camp food. Sams always has sample booths to try stuff. Lucky me there was a booth for Fudgie Wudgie there just for the weekend. I had to have some Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge yummy!!!!!
Walmart has some new office supplies that I decided I don’t need but want
I would love to deck out my computer desk at home with this:
They had this green, bright ass yellow, brown and another color I don’t recall. I started shopping around 2:30 and started to worry if I would make it to camp on time when I was leaving my last store at 5:30 LOL Camp can be so much work! It’s a good thing though that I was running behind because the county was doing a memorial of some sort. The road to where I needed to get my key was blocked off and all the police officers were participating, which is who I needed to get the key off of.
Friday night we had a campfire with Smores of coarse. I haven’t done a campfire in a year, since our last camping trip. I love the campfire. The smell, setting it up, keeping it going. There is just something about it. I love coming home from a trip and all my stuff smelling like a campfire.
That evening we had a bad storm roll through. The cabin set up has the girls in a bunk room on the top floor with windows on all sides. All the girls wound up dragging their mattress’s downstairs and sleeping on the dining room floor. You couldn’t hear or see much of anything there so they quickly fell asleep at 3 am finally!
For breakfast Saturday the girls made pancakes, bacon and eggs. The girls cook every aspect of all meals themselves. Here you see my niece cracking the eggs.
For lunch we had Walking Tacos. It’s a real easy meal to make and the kids love it! We brown ground meat and add taco seasoning. Then we set up a station with all ingredients they can complete their meal with. Frito’s or Tortilla Chips (you can get small bags they can eat right out of or do it in a bowl), shredded cheddar cheese, shredded lettuce and Catalina Salad Dressing. There are many other toppings you can add but for a bunch of girls we stuck with the basics.
For most of the day we had the girls make gifts for Mother’s Day as well as crafts for themselves. They spent alot of time just running around and having a good time. We had planned on a hike and outside play but it was just too cold. This is my daughter decorating a storage container.
You can get them at Pat Catans for $1.79 I believe.
I pushed for a Healthy Dinner and the girls all liked it. They put chicken, carrots, potatoes and seasoning into a foil packet to cook over the fire. They were so juicy and yummy! This was a meal my niece helped prepare.
The end result after about 20 minutes on hot coals:
One of my girls is a talented artist. She spent quite a bit of time on a drawing on the chalkboard in their bedroom.
Of coarse we had another campfire that evening while listening to the Pens game. Yay Pens won! Two of the girls decided to make up a scary story about a woman they saw in the woods to scare the other girls and wound up scaring themselves instead. Tee Hee, that’s what you get. We had banana boats and I would share a picture, but then you wouldn’t try them if you saw them first LOL You keep the peel on a banana and slice longways about halfway through. Stuff it with pieces of chocolate and marshmallow and wrap it up in foil. About 15-20 minutes on hot coals in the fire and you have warm mushy heaven!
Sunday pretty much consisted of packing and cleaning up the cabin. Yes the girls clean! It’s amazing what kids will do when there not at home.
We left our last mark in the scrapbook that stays at camp. The girls decorated the page and signed their names.
When my husband picked me up my other two children arrived with flowers
How sweet!
We only had a few issues over the weekend that involved one girl throwing a fit when she had to leave for awhile, another being a little too mature for my liking and her age, and another who had some stinky ass feet. Other than that it really was a perfect weekend without too much drama or trouble.
Girls thank you for a great weekend! And thank you to Lori, the mother who volunteered to come camping with us. You were fun to be around and very helpful! I hope that everyone keeps in touch, you will all be missed!
Note: If parents or girls want any pictures I can email some to you. I only put up ones of my daughter and niece here as I didn’t want to upset anyone.
A Burgh Summer
May 7th
Since I am laid off from work I have had more time to think about what I want to do this summer, besides vacation. In all likely hood I won’t have the money to go on vacation so I am stuck finding things to do here at home. If anyone wants to donate to the send Roxy on vacation fund let me know! LOL
Anyway, I thought I would share some great things going on here in the Burgh this summer.

Hospital Visit and Eating Healthy
May 6th
Today I didn’t get to do as much spring cleaning done. Hubby hurt his back the other day and he was in alot of pain so we wound up at the hospital this morning. I was looking forward to getting more done before the girl scout camping trip this weekend. I am nice so I offered to go with him and he took me up on it.
I had never been to Mercy hospital before. Been to Upper St. Clair, South side, and Children’s all of which have plus’s and minuses though thank goodness we haven’t had a need to visit the new Children’s yet.
The waiting room has chairs that I’ve never seen in another hospital before. They were pretty comfy.
The ladies at the front desk were nice. They didn’t really look right at you, maybe to avoid conversation but still nice. We get back to the room only about 15-20 min after we arrived and they gave him the dreaded gown. I’m feeling embarrassed for him but apparently when your in alot of pain you really don’t care what you have to wear.
